Lobster fishers face smaller total allowable catch of the summer

A year of a very strong El Nino weather system, along with unusually warm temperatures and longer-than-average winters, has affected fisheries along the South East Pacific Ocean.

The effects from this system have been felt most heavily in the Pacific islands where tuna and other marine invertebrates have become the dominant food source for large fisheries and are widely consumed.

In addition to the effects of El Nino, the Pacific Ocean is witnessing what seems to be one of the warmest ocean cycles on record for decades. This has prompted several scientists who study ocean conditions and climate change to study the effects this system has had on their lives and the ecosystems they rely on.

In March, a group of scientists released a new report about the effects of El Nino on the Pacific, which they say show that there have been significant changes to how ecosystems are responding to warm water in the Pacific.

One of the major impacts El Nino has had on Pacific ecosystems is the increase in the amount of water that is being moved from the Gulf of California to the south-west Pacific and to the East Pacific, creating more than enough heat and storminess to warm up the ocean.

But the impact of El Nino will not be fully reflected on an overall scale until December of this year, meaning that the impact of warm temperatures and longer-than-average winters will take hold early enough for the system to influence climate later in the year.

El Nino also brings sea ice and cloud cover to the Pacific, which means that a longer, wet winter means a larger chance of snow. It has led to record snowfall for parts of the western Pacific between December 2013 and February 2014, although sea ice extent fell back to a new record low in July.

The El Nino impacts of the 2012-14 El Niño (from the Global Oceans Monitoring Network) can be seen as a natural experiment in how long-term effects of an El Niño will affect the Pacific.


Scientists working to understand how El Niño impacts the South East Pacific region have found that ocean temperatures and storminess have already started to decline, which have been mirrored in sea ice extent.

At the same time, sea surface temperature in the eastern Pacific has risen, which is expected to continue into January, despite the fact that a new El Niño pattern, with a warming of around 2C (3.6F) over the region, started last month.

The impact of El Nino on sea ice and clouds in the region is expected to intensify in the coming months, as sea ice extent starts to grow again, according to the study's co-author Michael Stuckler, from the Centre for Research in Global Change, University College Londo
